Types of English Language Courses

There are many different types of English courses to choose from. Here is a list of the most popular courses with a summary of what to expect from the course. We hope that this information will help you select a course to suit your needs.

General English
 

For students from complete beginners upwards. These courses provide a balance of the four skills-reading, speaking, listening and writing. As well as looking to improve students’ grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Usually, these courses have flexible start dates and durations.

Business English
 

Students should take this course to boost their business career or business studies. Students will usually study specific areas such as marketing, HR, management etc. Language development will focus on speaking and writing skills, including presentations, negotiating, letter, email and report writing as well as telephoning skills. Executive courses are also available and are designed for professionals. The courses will cover the same area but tend to be more intensive.

English for Academic Purposes
 

These courses are designed to help students learn the English they need for academic study. Essay-writing, note-taking, listening to lectures, taking part in seminars, academic reading, library work, computer skills, general and social English. Sometimes vocabulary and terminology for the student’s subject.

One-to-One Courses

These courses are completely tailored to the students needs and are therefore extremely flexible in terms of course content and timetable. These courses are usually charged by the hour.

Exam Preparation Courses

Courses are specifically designed to prepare students for a wide range of examinations. These courses are usually more intensive with higher motivation levels amongst the students. Courses will cover exam strategies as well as practice papers and some General English. Class sizes tend to be smaller.

Pre-University English Courses

Also called Pre-sessional courses. For students who plan to study in the UK, and who have been asked for a minimum level of English. These courses can last from three weeks to a year and are usually offered by the university where the student plans to study.

English for Specific Purposes

For people who want to learn English to further a career in areas such as business, travel and tourism, and catering. Courses concentrate on the vocabulary and skills needed for jobs. This could be telephoning, writing reports or making presentations.

English Plus Combined Courses

English language is only one part of a course. The other part – the ‘plus’– could be training for a professional qualification or a hobby. The ‘plus’ part of the course could be anything from pottery to politics.

Seasonal or Vacation Courses

Summer and Easter and Christmas courses. These courses are usually for juniors (aged under sixteen). These courses often include holiday activities, such as sport or sightseeing.
