Homestay

Homestay is the most popular type of accommodation offered because offers the possibility of getting a great insight into the British way of life and culture as well as giving students the opportunity to make more progress with their English because they continue practising the language in a real life situation after the end of the classes. Do be aware that "host families" are sometimes couples without children or even singles, who have a room to rent. Homestay accommodation is usually offered on a half board basis-breakfast and evening meal during the week and full board therefore including lunch at the weekends. Accommodation is usually in a single room. Twin rooms for friends traveling together may also be possible. Types of accommodation offered and prices will vary from school to school and city tot city. If you have any doubts or questions about homestay accommodation you should ask your Study Overseas Student Counsellor.

Hostel/Hotel Accommodation

Most schools will be able to reserve you hotel or hostel accommodation. Please note that hostel accommodation is usually the cheapest option but also the most basic option. Hotel accommodation is obviously the most expensive option.

This is the most expensive option but may be required in an emergency. Hotels are quality assured by independent bodies such as the AA or RAC. The number of stars awarded is based on the facilities available at the hotel and not the cleanliness and decor of the hotel: these should all be up to a minimum standard.

Guest Houses

Guest houses are similar to hotels although usually an evening meal is not available or there is no choice. This is a cheaper option than hotels.

Bed&Breakfasts

This is normally part of a private house where a bedroom and possibly a bathroom are provided along with breakfast in the morning. This type of accommodation is normally cheaper than a guest house.

Hostels

Hostels normally provide the cheapest form of temporary accommodation and although basic are normally clean and conveniently located. Some of the best known hostels in the UK are run by organisations such as the IYHA or YMCA.

Shared School flat/apartment

Many schools offer their own accommodation for students near the school. Usually you share the bathroom and kitchen with about 3-6 other language students. This type of accommodation allows maximum independence during your stay and more contact with the other students.

Residences

During the summer months many language schools will offer extra accommodation in university halls of residence. This is usually self catering accommodation in single rooms. Once again this type of accommodation allows maximum independence but is most suited to students on short summer courses.

Private Accommodation

Finding your own private accommodation is the cheapest option if you are prepared to share a bedroom with another student. This is also the best option for students who wish to study for six months or more.

Deposits for private accommodation

It is standard for landlords in the UK to ask for one month’s deposit and 1 - 3 months rent in advance when they lease out accommodation to students.

Furniture in private accommodation

Most private accommodation comes with furniture. The quality and amount of this furniture will vary depending on the rent you are paying. It would usually include a: sofa, fridge, cooker, cooking utensils, one bed per bedroom, wardrobe etc. It would not normally include: bed linen, towels, TV, video or telephone.

Council Tax

This is a government tax that is levied in the UK for all properties and assessed according to the value and location of the property. The tax has to be paid by the residents of the property as opposed to the owner of the property. Full time students are exempt from this tax but you will have to visit your local Council Tax office to give them proof of your student status if you are renting a private property.
