Markets in the UK

There are very few markets still operational in the UK as the supermarkets have taken over more and more. However, it is still possible to find markets on certain days of the week. Examples of markets you might find are:

Markets

On certain days of the week you might be able to buy fresh fruit or vegetables from outdoor market stalls. In some cities by the coast you may also be able to buy fresh fish or seafood. All produce sold at markets can be purchased in supermarkets, often at cheaper prices, therefore, people would only purchase from a market either for the authentic experience, locality or specialist items. Famous examples include Portobello Market in London which now has more tourists than "real" shoppers.

Handicrafts

These are usually popular with tourists looking to buy presents to take home to their families. Typically take place on Saturdays or Sundays during the summer months.

Jumble Sales

This is a special type of market usually held in church or school halls. People bring along any unwanted goods such as clothes, ornaments or children's toys and sell them for charity or to raise money for the school or church. Can be good fun to go along for the experience, and can pick up some bargains at the same time.

Car-boot Sales

Similar to jumble sales although often less organised and tends to be for the seller's own purpose. People load up their car boots with unwanted items and sell them off along with other people, usually in some kind of car park or field. Another good place for the bargain hunter!
